Nosepiece Turrets Assemblies for the Olympus BH2

This page details the various nosepiece turret assemblies compatible with the Olympus BH-2 scopes. Those with the “BH2” prefix in the model designation were introduced as part of the BH-2 series, while those with the “BH” prefix were introduced as part of the older BH series. Unless stated otherwise, all may be used interchangeably on the BH-2.

BHTU Reverse-Inclined Fixed Nosepiece

The reverse-inclined nosepiece was used only on the BHSU and BHTU scopes. This nosepiece, which is permanently affixed onto the pillar arm of the BHSU/BHTU stand, features five objective positions with standard RMS threads and a knurled rubber grip ring around the outer perimeter of the turret. This assembly differs from the various modular nosepieces in that the dovetail slide has been replaced by a wedge mount (painted the same color as the BHSU/BHTU pillar arm), which functions to hold the nosepiece turret in the reverse-inclined orientation on the pillar arm. Since the addition of the wedge mount between the turret and the pillar arm increases the physical tube length of the scope, an optical correction barrel was added to the physical tube (specifically, within the wedge mount) to correct the optical tube length back to the required 160mm. The optical correction barrel achieves this tube-length reduction by using a Telan (tube) lens on the lower end to convert the finite-converging light rays leaving the objective lens to rays focused at optical infinity (i.e., parallel rays), and then using a second lens at the top end of the barrel to return to finite-converging rays once again, focusing the intermediate image at the appropriate position within the optical tube.

BH2-5RE Forward-Inclined Modular Nosepiece

The BH2-5RE forward-inclined modular nosepiece utilizes a dovetail slide mount that is compatible with the BHS, BHSP, BHT, and BHTP stands. This nosepiece features five objective positions with standard RMS threads and a knurled rubber grip ring around the outer perimeter of the turret. This was the standard nosepiece supplied with BHS and BHT scopes.

BH2-6RE Forward-Inclined Modular Nosepiece

The BH2-6RE forward-inclined modular nosepiece utilizes a modular dovetail slide mount that is compatible with the BHS, BHSP, BHT, and BHTP stands. This nosepiece features six objective positions with standard RMS threads and a knurled rubber grip ring around the outer perimeter of the turret. This is an upgrade to the standard 5-position nosepiece assembly.

BH2-NRE Forward-Inclined Modular Nosepiece

The BH2-NRE forward-inclined modular nosepiece utilizes a dovetail slide mount that is compatible with the BHS, BHSP, BHT, and BHTP scopes. This nosepiece features four objective positions with 26mm threads and a black metal grip ring (with large knurls) around the outer perimeter of the turret. Metal knurling was used on this assembly, rather than rubber, to reduce the potential for contamination of silicon wafers. This nosepiece accepts long barrel NEO objectives, for darkfield metallurgical applications.

BH-RE Forward-Inclined Modular Nosepiece

The BH-RE forward-inclined modular nosepiece utilizes a dovetail slide mount that is compatible with the BHS, BHSP, BHT, and BHTP scopes. The BH-RE was introduced as part of the earlier BH family of scopes, and features five objective positions with RMS threads and metal knurling around the outer perimeter of the turret.

BH-NRE Forward-Inclined Modular Nosepiece

The BH-NRE forward-inclined modular nosepiece utilizes a dovetail slide mount that is compatible with the BHS, BHSP, BHT, and BHTP scopes. The BH-NRE was introduced as part of the earlier BH family of scopes, and features four objective positions with 25mm threads and metal knurling around the outer perimeter of the turret. This assembly allows the earlier short barrel NEO objectives to be used on BH-2 stands, for darkfield metallurgical applications.

BH-PRE Forward-Inclined Modular Nosepiece

The BH-PRE forward-inclined modular nosepiece utilizes a dovetail slide mount that is compatible with the BHS, BHSP, BHT, and BHTP scopes. The BH-PRE was introduced as part of the earlier BH family of scopes, but was supplied with BHTP and BHSP scopes. The BH-PRE features four objective positions with RMS threads (three of which include centering screws) and metal knurling around the perimeter of the turret, for polarizing applications.
