BH2 Accessories from the Empire of Dirt Workshop

Note: Because the actual components, which are made in black plastic, are difficult to photograph, the component images on this page are idealized computer renderings to illustrate the physical geometry of the various parts.

The BH2-DFR Darkfield/Rheinberg Kit
The BH2-DFR Darkfield/Rheinberg Accessory Kit from the Empire of Dirt Workshop adds Darkfield Illumination or Rheinberg illumination to the Olympus BH2.

COMPATIBILITY:  The BH2-DFR is compatible with the BH2-CD and U-AC2 Abbe condensers, as well as the BH2-AAC aplanatic/achromatic condenser. The BH2-DFR provides darkfield or Rheinberg Illumination (with suitable Rheinberg filters) for 4x through 20x objectives (and likely low-NA 40x objectives, with careful setup).

The various components of this kit can be made on just about any 3D printer. If you don’t have access to a 3D printer, someone you know likely does. If not, please contact the Empire of Dirt Workshop.

Please don’t get overwhelmed when you look at the BH2-DFR PDF. There are a lot of parts in this kit, but to do basic darkfield on your BH2, you really only need two of those parts!

The BH2-DFR was designed to place a simple darkfield patch stop or Rheinberg filter up into the bottom bore of the condenser, very close to the aperture diaphragm within the condenser. Close proximity of the darkfield patch stop to the aperture diaphragm is a necessary condition to achieve acceptable darkfield.

Don’t fall for the misinformation out there. Attaching a patch stop to the bottom of your condenser will not work well for the BH2, since the aperture diaphragm is not physically close enough to the condenser mounting dovetail for this method to provide acceptable results.

The Empire of Dirt Workshop BH2-OBL Oblique Accessory Kit
The BH2-OBL accessory kit from the Empire of Dirt Workshop adds Oblique Illumination or Darkfield Illumination to the Olympus BH2.

COMPATIBILITY: The BH2-OBL is compatible with the BH2-CD and U-AC2 Abbe condensers, as well as the BH2-AAC aplanatic/achromatic condenser. The BH2-OBL adds simple Oblique Illumination or (limited) Darkfield Illumination to the Olympus BH2.

The various components of this kit can be made on just about any 3D printer. If you don’t have access to a 3D printer, someone you know likely does. If not, please contact the Empire of Dirt Workshop.

The BH2-OBL was designed to place a simple oblique stop (or darkfield patch stop) up into the bottom bore of the condenser, very close to the aperture diaphragm within the condenser. Close proximity of the oblique or darkfield patch stop to the aperture diaphragm is a necessary condition to achieve acceptable darkfield.

Don’t fall for the misinformation out there. Attaching an oblique stop to the bottom of your condenser will not work well for the BH2, since the aperture diaphragm is not physically close enough to the condenser mounting dovetail for this method to provide acceptable results.
